5 Good Excuses for Canceling a Date

Have a date but don’t want to go? It happens. You make a date only to discover, you are just not ready for getting back into the dating scene or you discover he’s a real weenie.

Instead a confrontation and speech, use a believable excuse to bow out gracefully. Remember, he may not get the hint with just one cancellation. If you sense it won’t work, the right thing to do is to come clean and confess your fears or disinterest.

However, if you’re like me, and hate hurting someone’s feelings go a bit softer with one of these excuses. I prefer to ease into it!

I’m sorry, I double-booked.

Double booking happens in everyone’s life, that’s what makes it believable. Explain that you forgot about your prior commitment. Tell him, you’ll have to offer him a rain check (if you want to see him again.) If you don’t want to see him again, simply say, “I’ll get back to you.”

My friend needs me.

“Yep, she’s going through a tough spot. I really need to be there for her. Sorry.” It’s that’s simple! What a good excuse for canceling a date!

I’m feeling sick.

“I went to my sister’s house and her kids were sick. I think I got it.” If you want to cancel the date forever, describe some symptoms like “I want to throw up” or “I can’t stay off the potty.”

An unexpected family emergency

I got a run. “It’s complicated but my family needs me. I can’t get into the details, I am sure you understand.”When he begins to ask questions, I use this method. Look sad, speak in low tones. “It’s not something I can talk about right now.”

My pet, Fluffy is sick as a well, a dog!

Who doesn’t own or love pets? If you have a pet, this makes a good excuse. However, if you are absent a pet, don’t do it. This could come back and bite you in the butt later. Explain that Fluffy got routine shots that made him sick or seems a little depressed.

Canceling a date shouldn’t be difficult and don’t require a lengthy, elaborate excuse. If you’re uncomfortable with any of my suggestions, just say, “I can’t make it tonight, I’ll have to explain later. Thanks.”
